Starting December 28, 2024, Singapore’s public transport fares for buses and MRT services will increase. Adult commuters paying by card will see a 10-cent rise per journey, while concessionary fares for students, seniors, and people with disabilities will go up by 4 cents per trip. This marks an overall fare increase of 6%, slightly lower than the 7% hike implemented last year.
For those who use monthly passes, the fares will remain unchanged.
The fare hike is primarily driven by inflation and wage growth, although a decrease in energy prices has moderated the overall increase, said the Public Transport Council (PTC).
In response to the fare adjustments, the government is also increasing support for lower-income households, providing S$60 in transport vouchers, up from last year’s S$50, with eligibility expanded to more families. The vouchers allow one to purchase monthly passes or top off fare cards.
Resident households with a monthly household income of up to S$1,800 per person are now eligible for the vouchers, up from a prior limit of S$1,600 per person. This change will allow an additional 60,000 households to benefit from the vouchers.
